Job Overview

  • This Job opportunity to have a career as a member of the clubs Ground staff team has become available, you will learn to prepare football pitches to the highest of standards for all squads from under 9’s right up to the men’s & woman’s first team.
  • We are seeking a candidate who has had previous experience working on sports turf preferably qualified, the club want to add experience to the department, the successful candidate will be working with a large team communicating with staff in our department, from other departments and the coaching staff from all the squads, presenting yourself as expected by Manchester United, a positive working attitude is essential

Key Facts and Figures

  • Working to a rota working 5 in 7 this includes weekends and fixtures at the stadium this is part & partial of working at a football club and it will be expected of the successful candidate to work some of these hours covering fixtures & training sessions at all sites for paid overtime.
  • The Green staff department currently consists of 18 members of staff that cover 4 sites including Old Trafford stadium, Carrington Training Ground, The Cliff Training Ground & Littleton Road training ground.
  • The club have a strict policy regarding work PPE, the PPE will be provided for you to always wear while on any of our sites.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To prepare and maintain football pitches to the highest of standards all year round.
  • The successful candidate will support the department by carrying out duties to your utmost abilities.
  • The successful candidate would preferably have experience working under pressure while assisting colleagues to achieve the department goals.
  • Communicate professionally with your immediate colleagues, also communicate professionally with other departments.
  • To learn to use all the resources available to you professionally, effectively & efficiently.
  • Health & Safety & environmental experience preferable, you may be asked to assist & comply with any club or external audits.
  • To conduct yourself in a professional manner toward employer, employees, colleagues, representatives from the companies the club deal with and the public.
  • To be approachable with a positive can-do attitude to your immediate colleagues and colleagues in other departments.

  • The main point of contact will be the Grounds Manager (Tony Sinclair) who is responsible for every aspect regarding the department
  • Head Groundsman in the Ground Managers absence, due to meetings or annual leave
  • Immediate department colleagues

Your role will be reviewed twice a year to help sustain a consistent high level of work performance, and to develop you within your role.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Previous experience in the industry is required,
  • Experience on machines is preferable, Toro 3100D, Dennis Premiers & G860, C34 Evolution electric mowers, Toro Pro-cores, tractor mounted aerators, line marking with wheel to wheel and spray markers including Beam rider to name a few
  • A positive “can do” attitude with a good work ethic is important
  • Football clubs have fixtures that will involve the successful candidate working unsociable hours in the evenings and weekends, a Flexible proactive approach is essential & an understanding to how a football season works regarding working hours
  • Reliability and punctuality is essential
  • Level 1 qualification in Sports turf is required, and candidates with level 2 qualification in sports turf is preferable, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to obtain level 3 in sports turf
  • Candidate preferable to have experience with Health & safety guidelines as protecting all our staff is a priority
  • Candidate to have knowledge of environmental guidelines
  • Knowledge regarding fertilisers preferable including chemical spraying applications
  • PA1 & PA6 spraying licence is essential
  • A good sense of housekeeping to always keep the work areas as tidy as possible
  • A sense of pride when it comes to cleaning of used machinery, so everything is left clean and tidy for the next user
